The red rule is this: if you see red, shoot it. Red signifies blood and danger, warnings and passion; it attracts our eye like no other color, and looking at the Super 16 this week I realise I crave more red in my life. In my previous apartment I painted a pomegranate wall in my living room, and always loved how the afternoon light hit the paint, creating a womb-like glow. It was the perfect spot for book reading and day dreaming; might be time to recreate that wall…

mosaic_windowsI think this might be my favorite Super 16 so far! Photographers are always looking for the light, and if its streaming in through a window you’re on to a winner. It’s winsome and magical, romantic and dreamy; there’s often a bed involved, suggesting cozy slumber, and if you add in a sleeping cat or some gauzy drapes you have yourself some photographic gold.

mosaicc17ff6ef983dc1e3a5a97649570aecdad24271a2If I said the word photograph to you, you’d most likely imagine an image of a place or a person, yes? We use our cameras to record our travels, celebrations and families, and find ourselves drawn to images of people, even if we don’t know them. We can see ourselves in their eyes, perhaps, or want to learn more about their clothes, heartbreaks or dreams. My Super 16 this week celebrates the art of portraiture, how so much can be conveyed in a person’s face, in their expressions, and in how the photographer saw them through the lens of their camera.

The first roll of film I shot at art college was black & white; it was my very first attempt to make art out of photography, unlike my usual snaps of friends and occasions. Seventeen years later and black & white images still hold a special place in my heart; they have an elegance and purity, without distracting color, that focuses your eye on shape and light and shadow. I remember my photography tutor telling me that to be a great photographer you had to master the art of black & white first, that those shades of gray had infinite possibilities. Looking at my Super 16 this week, I can see that he was right.

There are days when it’s all too much, when the outside world is breathing down my neck, deadlines are looming and there’s just not enough time to get it all done. On those days I want to run away, and so I escape to the land of Flickr and feast my eyes on beautiful photographs that take me away from it all. My Super 16 this week is all about this need to be as free as a bird, to spread my wings and let my dreams take flight. Wouldn’t you love to be a bird, even for just one day?

I never used to have such a sweet tooth, and I try very hard not to indulge it too often, but who can resist a cupcake? It’s a perfectly formed piece of heaven on a plate, all frosted and pretty, promising happy days and true love – or is it just me who thinks that? My Super 16 this week shows how these photogenic little cakes will always capture the imagination of photographers, right before they greedily stuff them in their mouths and try to hide the evidence!

It’s no secret that I’m a photography buff, so this week my Super 16 pays tribute to the beauty of analogue cameras. With digital photography getting sleeker and faster, sometimes it’s fun to look back at the beauty that went before; these days my favorite accessory is a beaten up Polaroid camera or the chunky metal and glass of my Hasselblad. Judging by my Flickr favorites I’m not the only one who has a camera fetish, either – camera geeks unite!
