This is my final Super 16 column, and as we started with a look at food I thought we’d finish with a delicious postprandial coffee. I adore coffee but in recent months have discovered that I can’t drink too much of it (devastating news!), so when I do indulge I make sure it’s rich, syrupy and total perfection in a cup. Coffee is the fuel that powers our working day; it’s the warming brew that comforts us in a snowstorm; the milky nectar that brings friends together. How do you take yours?
Thank you, Brittni, for letting me share my favourites with you all. I hope you’ve enjoyed the ride and found some new discoveries along the way. Enjoy the rest of your summer, friends! ~ Susannah x

Hands are my favourite part of the human body. You can speak with your hands; we hold the hands of our children as we cross the road. We paint and sew and write with our hands. We make music with them too. We show our commitment to the one we love with a ring on our finger. You can tell so much about a person by the state of their hands – how well they have loved, how hard they have worked. Bitten nails speak volumes. And photographs of hands? Well, I love those the best of all.

In another life I own a VW campervan; she is deep turquoise blue and has super-shiny hubcaps. Inside the van are blankets made from knitted granny squares and lots of squishy cushions, and at weekends we go driving in the countryside, cameras packed in the back with a fully-stocked hamper for picnicking opportunities. She’s ferried me all over Europe and parked in the mud at music festivals. But as i said, this is another life, another me. The me right now doesn’t have a driver’s license (true), but oh, one day that van will be mine!

If I don’t have a camera in my hand you can bet good money I have some kind of writing instrument there – pens, pencils, my beloved Moleskines – to me, the narrative nature of photography complements the writing life so well. When reading I see images in my mind’s eye; when looking at photographs I conjure stories in my head. And is there anything more evocative of fairy tales and imagination than a dreamy Polaroid of a vintage typewriter? Oh the stories those beauties could tell!

I grew up beside the sea and I think this has coloured the way I see the world. Until a year ago I lived 10 minutes from the shore and I find that I am missing the pull of the tides, wishing I could go for a stroll along the beach, and not have to drive an hour to have that pleasure. I was spoiled, living so close to the water; when something is so everyday you take it for granted, not knowing that when it is gone you’ll pine for it, yearning for sand between your toes and seagulls soaring overhead. So my Super 16 is dedicated to the ocean, in all its grandeur and majesty.
Until next time, friends… Susannah

You’d expect white to be an absence of colour, but it can hold so many shades in its deathly pale hand. I love the purity of white sheets and sheepskin rugs, wafer-thin porcelain cups and daisies dotted through lawns like snow. I dream of white painted floorboards throughout my house, all minimal and Scandinavian-style; of course, the other side of my brain wonders how easy they are to keep clean, but a girl can still dream, can’t she?

I spend a lot of time in junk shops and markets searching out gems for my home. Top of my list are vintage coffee pots, retro glassware (especially red and blue) and old (and dusty) oil paintings of flowers. I like my home to feel lived-in and well-loved, and I find that by surrounding myself with vintage pieces I not only feel comforted but inspired too. This week’s Super 16 celebrates homemade style, in all its crafty fabulous flavours!
