Back in July, we took a look at interiors that highlighted the use of copper pipes. After a flirtation with gold and brass, the world of interiors is now enjoying a resurgence of copper in many different forms. The most notable is the popular Tom Dixon pendant lamp, which has graced many interior vignettes, both on its own as a single accent piece as well as in large groups. Its great rounded shape makes it a natural step up from similar dining and kitchen fixtures typically shown in white. Copper is a great new/old material, adding warmth with its orangey-brown tones, but acting more as a neutral in the interior environment.
Copper has some great qualities. As a metal, it can be spun into lamps, or used in sheet metal form to accent walls and table surfaces. It can be sealed to retain its bright shiny newness, or left to patina over time, showing wear and tear and celebrating its chemical reactions. It has been used for hundreds of years as a stable exterior material, and I am thrilled to see it finally being brought indoors. Paired with neutrals such as whites, blacks, greys and wood, it is a natural.
