Since its Monday, I thought we start off the week with some photo inspiration from Iro (aka ivy style33 on flickr) of  New Ivy Style. Really great stuff here (including greeting cards in addition to multiple sizes of prints).

Like I mentioned last week, I’ve become obsessed with decorating our home as of late. And as a result, I am constantly checking out handmade shops that fall in to the all encompassing home category.

Of course, Mengsel is at the top of my list, with screen printed modern pieces that have that mid-century flair.

I’ve been getting back into a little bit of embroidery work lately and have been searching around for patterns. And I love the quirky appeal of these printable PDF patterns from Wild Olive. They are so adorable, I can think of tons of things I could use these for.

And they are super affordable too. Each pattern comes as a set (so there are multiple designs in each PDF) and is just $4. And you can get a discount if you buy three or more patterns as well. What a deal!

This week, Room by Room with FormFire Glassworks takes a look at a strong iconic piece, the Panton Cone table.

As part of a line of furniture designed by Verner Panton, including the Cone Chair and Heart Cone Chair, the Cone Table was introduced in 1958 as a companion occasional table. Currently available from Vitra in either white or black laminate with a stainless steel satin finish base, the table was originally made with a wood top and base cone option. Although meant to reside with Panton’s Cone chairs, I would suggest a very simple chair as an accompaniment, letting this strong piece take center stage. Although its lines are strong and forceful, pairing it with simple pieces allows both of them to shine.

Color combined with simple form and authentic materials can create an environment that feels personal and warm, even when furniture is angular and a little more severe. A painting in acrylics creates a good balance of cool tones with a pop of warm color for some excitement. And old wool sweater has a second life in a set of felt coasters, while a mix of hardwoods are joined to create a wall-hung timepiece. Fabric is pleated to create a textural pillow, and combined and cut-out to form a bin to store odds and ends.

Next week I will choose a new iconic piece and give you my picks for accessorizing your modern home.

A while back I received a really lovely email from Janet Varney, who is the host of TBS’s Dinner and a Movie. And she told me about an amazing event that she has put together, along with Tinlark Gallery, that can only be described as part gallery, part craft, and part vintage. Sounds great, huh?

If you live in the Los Angeles area, you do not want to miss this! Here are the details…

FLEETING IMMERSION is a revolutionary pop-up concept shop melding arts, culture and shopping.

Celebrating the handmade in art, and the fusion of concept and commerce, FLEETING IMMERSION embraces the pop-up concept and runs thematically wild – featuring highly original works of art, furniture, handmade goods, vintage clothing, and accessories, with every element of the show aligned around a unique, ever-changing theme.

For the show and shop’s inaugural, 10-day run in September, 2010, Tinlark Gallery (located in the historic Crossroads of the World complex on Sunset Blvd.) will be transformed into the world of Santa Fe Astronaut, with each artist’s contribution inspired by the unique foundations of the Southwest…and outer space!”
