Great artist to check out… Seattle based painter and printmaker, Claire Jauregui, creates work with a bold color palette that brings out the playful side to her work. But Jauregui also explores the more serious side of things by pushing certain elements and principles to the limits. Dealing with space, balance, and repetition, and the way the ways in which they interact.

Special Offer: Free shipping when you mention papernstitch at checkout (in the message to seller box).

Today I am feeling inspired by a recently completed project (above) by Maria Gil Ulldemolins, who perhaps is most known for her hair portrait drawings.

The sculpture is entitled Man, I feel like a woman and explores the idea of femininity, using a lenghty process best described on Maria’s portfolio site. But basically, Maria has cross stitched an entire barbie doll. Incredible.

You can view more of Maria’s work on her portfolio site . And be sure to visit the Nosideup blog to catch up on what Maria is inspired by (it’s a great art blog).

This week, Room by Room with FormFire Glassworks takes a look at another current piece reminiscent of modern styling, the LAX Free-Standing Shelf by Mash Studios.

The LAX shelving unit is a timeless mixture of hard-edged metal and warm walnut that enhances any space. With no visible hardware, the piece has clean, simple lines that offer a perfect backdrop to art and books. The white powder-coated aluminum doors slide in grooves along the wood frame to allow access to the almost six feet of cabinet length. Simple base construction keeps the unit looking solid, yet it floats above the floor visually. Mash Studios has created a full line of LAX furniture, from tables to chairs to a platform bed. They are worth checking out, as their price point is fairly reasonable.

Clean lines and visual textures are the order of the day for my handmade picks. A recycled glass jug makes a clear shade for a pendant light, while intricate city map cutwork adorns the wall in a monochromatic way. A silkscreened silicone placemat adds a subtle design to a plain tabletop, and a canvas pillow cover adds a sweet touch with a giraffe print. Hanging ceramic pods give a smooth texture and hold suspended air plants for all to enjoy.

Next week I will choose a new iconic piece and give you my picks for accessorizing your modern home.

I am a self-proclaimed animal lover. I don’t have any children, so my pets are like my kids. Yep, I am one of those people.

So naturally, I am currently going crazy for these animal photographs from papernstitch alum, Laura Evans. They make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Aren’t they great?

You can find more of Laura’s work at her etsy shop, Love Laugh Believe.
