I know it’s Earth Day, but today is also my brother’s 23rd birthday and I just wanted to say Happy Birthday Brandon! My mom took this picture of us when were little, after I had just caught a huge catfish in the lake behind our house. We put it in a bucket of water to show my brother, before releasing it back in to the lake. He was only two or three at the time, so he was pretty excited and inquisitive. What a day.

This week, Room by Room with FormFire Glassworks takes a look at the AJ lamp series by Arne Jacobsen.

Designed for Copenhagen’s SAS Royal Hotel along with his Egg Chair in 1957, the AJ lamp series is a perfect example of simple form matched with function. With an angled shade that places your task lighting specifically where you need it, this series of lamps is a superb addition to your modern decor. The openwork base was designed to hold an ashtray, but is now a decorative element that lightens what could appear a bit heavy if made solid. Originally available in table and floor models, the current selection includes a host of new colors and a wall sconce version manufactured by Louis Poulsen.

Inspired by the new light and darker blue of the AJ lamp selection, I chose a set of aqua-blue accessories. A ceramic vessel echoes the curve of the shade while taking a step to a more organic feel. A print pokes fun at the standard Home Sweet Home hanging with a modern twist and a nod to the Eames’. Placed on a sofa are a set of patchwork pillows that reflect geometry and clean lines, while a clock recycled from a car hood hangs on the wall. An original painting of tree trunks opens a window to another world.

Next week I will choose a new iconic piece and give you my picks for accessorizing your modern home.

Thursday’s Favorites.

This Sailing Necklace is driving me crazy. I adore the image of the boat (reminds me of my Dad) and use of vintage supplies. Of course, there are plenty of beautiful pieces to choose from Inmost Light.

Which ones are your favorites?

I adore these two workspaces. This first one is a great option for people who are renting and don’t want to put tons of holes in the wall. Just secure a long line of fishing line, ribbon, or twine, add mini paperclips of clothes pins and you’re ready to fill the space with all of your paper inspirations.

Or cluster your artwork in similar frames and hang for a look more along the lines of the second workspace. Easy peasy.
