I have mentioned the work of Maria Gil Ulldemolins of Nosideup several times before on the blog. Her portraits focus mainly on hair, and the intricate lines and simple beauty that comes with it. Maria’s new line of tote bags is quite clever as well. Don’t you think?
Visit Nosideup for more from Maria Gil Ulldemolins.

I hope this isn’t too off topic, but… its officially summer and nothing says I love being hot and sticky like doing some good old-fashioned yard work in the middle of the day. But keeping up with the great outdoors can often feel like an absolutely daunting task, and if you don’t happen to be one of those “yard-work types” how do you keep your outdoor space from looking like a run-down jungle?
Well, I have been trying to figure that out since we moved into our first home two years ago. But one thing is for sure…every option I can think of involves cutting down on the amount of grass I have to mow.

So, the first idea that comes to mind is creating an easy to maintain patio or deck. The bigger the better, whether it be reclaimed wood, concrete, or stone. If you don’t have a green thumb, you will want to make sure you get this part right! I love the stained concrete blocks in the first image. It really gives a modern feeling, while adding a pop of color. Choosing concrete over wood may prove to be cost effective and easier to maintain as well.

This second option may be a crazy thought for some…fake grass! I know, I know- it sounds weird, but aren’t these lawns beautiful? They don’t look fake do they? But they are. They actually make some pretty realistic looking faux grass now, and the days of astroturf, mini-golf carpet is gone. Think about the amount of time you would save on mowing the lawn, not to mention the amount of money you would save on watering the “lawn”. What do you think? Would you try one of these backyard options with your own home?

Rock’n'roll is a prostitute: it should be tarted up, performed!
Who doesn’t love dudes dressed up like ladies and strutting around on stage singing folk music? If you ever have a day where you’re feeling drab or frumpy, take a lesson from the glam rock stars of the early ’70s: throw on a frock, some heels or high boots, a fur or boa of some kind, a loud pattern, let your hair down, darken your lipstick and strut! Turn your frumpiness into ridiculousness — and glam it up!

Design Dreaming Workstation via Miss Vu
This Wednesday marks the start of a new weekly feature on papernstitch called Wednesday Workstations. I am on flickr all the time researching people’s work and searching for inspiring images. And one thing that always captures my attention is seeing the way people work. Cluttered and messy or super put together and clean. It inspires me and I hope it will inspire you too!
This week, I love the workstation of Miss Vu, who catalogs images of her desk and inspiration board each month with a totally different look. Above is Miss Vu’s desk in March. I love the simplicity and the pops of white, mixed with hints of bold color.
This week’s fantastic fantasticness is all about Kate Pugsley. Her art makes me so happy! So simple and sweet. Love this Mermaid Girl print.
And everyone I know has felt like Paper Bag Head Girl on one occasion or another. Kate uses her gocco printer to print the black lines of the prints and fills in the details with watercolors. I love the simple effect that it gives them. Like they’re illustrations right out of your head, managing with few lines and few colors to describe the whole range of your emotions. I am quite partial to this, as you can see. I very much like being able to see something about the human condition illustrated for me. It makes everything a bit more…bearable?
So. Now that you know a bit too much about me, go check out Kate Pugsley’s etsy shop!

First Video…about papernstitch from brittni on Vimeo.
Movie reel that is…well, video at least. I have been wanting to do a video for a long, long time…must have been from the envy I started feeling from all the lovely Dialogue videos from Design for Mankind. This is my first video for papernstitch, and I am so excited. I am hoping that this will become a weekly part of the blog, where I will talk about various topics: business advice, artwork, etc. This first video is the story of papernstitch and how it got started.
But for the next one, I need a little bit of help. I want to know what you want to hear more about…artists to look out for? tips for your business? favorites from…? What do you want to hear? Let me know in the comments. I’ll choose one for my next video, and it could be your suggestion.
