I’ve been feeling overworked for the past few months and am therefore entertaining escapist fantasies, one of which is a lifestyle on West Egg where I have nothing better to do at the crack of noon but ding the neck of a decanter against the rim of a rocks glass and apply another layer of bright red lipstick. (You know, before all the horrible accidents take place.) So if we can’t take an actual vacation to the time between the wars, we can at least take an aesthetic one.
Of course, there was the drawback of not being able to legally drink…
… but that never stopped, my grandma so it certainly won’t stop me!
A huge congratulations is in order for Catia Chien, who won a distinguished merit award in the 3×3 mag Pro Show for her Hereafter sequential art published by New Reliable Press. She will have a page from her story in the 3×3 illustration annual No6 along with a lot of other great illustrators. This year they had nearly 2,000 entries and ony 14% made it into the show. That is wonderful! Congratulations Catia.
These whimsical illustrations look like they are straight out of your kids favorite children’s book. Catia creates these narrative pieces with a unique artist’s point of view. And we have a special offer for all you papernstitch readers from Catia Chien. Mention papernstich at checkout and get a free summer postcard set with any purchase of $20 or more! Visit Catia Chien here.
Alright, I am not a very big Banksy fan, but I must admit that I was VERY intrigued by this video. I wish I could make the trip for this show. I have never seen anything like it.
You may have seen this little shop before, since it’s been an exhibitor right here on PaperNStitch, but I felt the need to show you again. Not entirely sure if this counts as illustration, but I’m counting it because it definitely falls into the visual arts category. Mae has quickly become one of my favorite places to window shop in the last few weeks.
My fiance and I have decided to buy a house, and I can’t wait to decorate the walls with these beautiful fabric decals! They are perfectly girly and sweet (hopefully he won’t mind too much!).
Aren’t they impossibly cute!? I’m just completely in love. How cute for a nursery too? Or a laundry room? Or a long hallway? Maybe even the kitchen cabinets! Endless possibilities await.
The coolest part in my opinion though, is that the fabric wall stickers are completely reusable, scrunchable, even WASHABLE! Yes. Now what are you waiting for? These decals are calling your name!

The modern icon we will be looking at this week on Room by Room with FormFire Glassworks was not only popular in its original incarnation, but has been the inspiration for pieces available today from Ikea to Target.

George Nelson created the “Bubble Lamp” line for Howard Miller in 1947 where it was sold through the late 1970’s, when it was discontinued. Nelson never named the different lamp designs and they were simply given numbers by Howard Miller. In the 1990′s Modernica reissued the “Bubble Lamp” line and “named” each individual Bubble Lamp design, including the ‘Ball’ shown here. Available in many shapes with straight or criss-crossing frames, the Bubble Lamp has stood the test of time. Because of the simplicity of color and form of these lamps, they work with quite a few looks, from a strong retro feel to a more up-to-date pared-down decor. Instead of merely providing a light source, the Bubble Lamp (in all its many shapes) also takes up visual space in a room, and is a great way to make a high-ceilinged room feel more intimate.
It is the simplicity of this modern icon that has inspired my accessory selection. To complement such a basic form, clean lines and straightforward ideas are key. A concrete coffee table looks solid yet has cutouts that hint at a deeper concept. A magnetic vase allows you to play with the lines of your display. Type-inspired coasters echo the round shape without being too referential, while a felt bookbox softens the scene. A wenge clock has a strong, clean look with moving dials that play off the lamp’s round form.
Next week I will choose a new iconic piece and give you my picks for accessorizing your modern home.
